Ellen DeGeneres tests out Kinect

Further proof, if proof were needed, that Microsoft is going after the middle-aged women demographic with Kinect. First it was Oprah, now it’s Ellen DeGeneres.

Oprah Winfrey recently helped Microsoft promote Kinect by featuring it on her show and giving away one of the systems to each member of the audience. Ellen has gone one stage further, by testing Kinect out live in front of her audience, although they didn’t get given one free.

Ellen does a good job on Dance Central, and it does appear as though it’s actually her playing the game rather than some unfortunate stooge. And just like Oprah’s, Ellen’s audience goes insane at the sight of Kinect in operation. Mainly because they are all middle-aged women who thought the Wii was the pinnacle of home entertainment. And now your whole body is the controller!!!

Kinect is already reported to be selling out fast in the U.S. and beyond, and I can only imagine it’s mothers getting an early start on their Christmas shopping. On that score Microsoft has pitched Kinect just right, subtly pushing it as the next step up from the Wii. Which I guess it is, really.

PS3 to overtake Xbox 360 in 2011?

In terms of global sales, the PS3 is catching up to the Xbox 360 slowly but surely. Could the Sony console overtake its Microsoft rival in the next couple of years?

The Xbox 360 launched a year ahead of the PS3, and managed to build up an impressive lead in that first 12 months. However, the PS3 has slowly but surely closed the gap, and the latest official sales figures (up to Sept. 30, 2010) released by both companies show there is a gap of just 2.9 million units between the two consoles in terms of worldwide sales.

In the last quarter alone the PS3 caught up by 700,000 units, shifting 3.5 million compared to the 2.8 million of the Xbox 360. If this rate were to continue then the PS3 would be close to overtaking the Xbox 360 by the end of September 2011. But that’s a very big ‘If’.

The release of Move has helped Sony post these impressive PS3 sales figures, but Kinect is launching next week and looks likely to arrive with a huge splash. It could be that this holiday season belongs to the Xbox 360 and Kinect, widening the gap once again.

I personally think it’ll be touch and go whether the PS3 catches up to the Xbox 360 by the time their successors are announced, with the two remaining close for the foreseeable future. So can we settle for an amicable draw?

NB: An earlier version of this post pegged the current gap at 5.4 million units.

Beneath A Steel Sky and Lure of The Temptress. GOG.com specialises in the supply of classic and hard-to-find game titles and operates in a similar fashion to Valve’s Steam service. Beneath a Steel Sky is a sci-fi adventure about a dystopian future while Lure of The Temptress is a swords-and-sorcery fantasy adventure.

The games which are on offer have been freely available from Revolution Software for a few years now, but GOG.com guarantees they’ll run on your system no matter the OS, thanks to some re-coding and DOS emulation tweaks. GOG.com’s available games to buy are also reasonably priced, weighing in at $5.99 and $9.99 price bands and are DRM-free into the bargain!

Membership to the GoodOldGames.com website is free; you only pay for what you buy, so why not pop over and pick yourself up two classic adventure titles just for signing up?
